im in nyc hanging out with my cousins and it's a lot of fun but im sooo sad i have to miss patrick's (stella tells me i go out with spongebob's friend, among other things) birthday party. recently i have forgotten how to type/think bc i constantly can't spell and i use the wrong usages of they're/their/there which used to make me cringe. so anyway yesterday i saw lindsey lohan on the street shooting this movie; it was pretty crazy. so i called joseph and spazzed out a little.

on the cousins...my cousin sarah currently plays 3 sports (just in this season--i guess thats possible at jew school)...and she's the captain of every team she's on. and then ben is super tall and smart and has had this mysterious girlfriend forever. and reuvie is still really nice and cute. theyre so cool bc they are half cuban.

idk i've been walking around the city all day listening to good music and just chilling and enjoying new york. i think we're going shopping today. i don't really like shopping so much. oh well.

i forgot to bring that physics prelab shit home so ill probably have to do that sunday night. jeez.

Today I thought, "I'm a shitty person. If I had never heard that glass half-empty/full life metaphor, I would probably always say the glass was half-empty." But then I really thought about it for a few seconds. Society is always pushing you to see the glass as half-full. But really, usually when you are looking at a glass of water, it was once almost full (or 1/14 empty). I really don't know anyone who routinely fills their glasses half way.

So in this case (most of the time) when the glass was once full but is now half empty, it is more correct to in fact say half empty when describing the quantity since it has been half emptied out. On the other hand, as often as I am drinking a glass of water, I am pouring myself one. But I try to make this happen pretty quickly and not take moments to gaze at the level of the water at different points in the filling experience. (If I were to fill it exactly half full, I would consider this an appropriate time to use the expression.)

If I were to stumble across (without spilling) a glass of water which I knew nothing about, I would believe that half of the water had been drunk or had evaporated. I would declare the unclaimed glass half empty.

One question is, if I had spilled the aforementioned glass and it were now empty, would it be more optimistic to say that "it's ok, the glass was already half-empty" or would that still be pessimistic? Would it be better to bawl and scream, "I'm as thirsty as a rhino and that glass was half fucking full!!!"

Another is, what if the substance isn't water...if it's prune juice that you're being forced to drink? Then, wouldn't it better to say, "Damn, this glass is half empty already!"

Maybe you do have water. It was once full, but you drank half of it in 5 seconds you fucking water whore. If you go on telling yourself it's still half full, you'll have it all done in 10 seconds elephant. It would be better to realize that your water supply is diminishing and ration it out for yourself for the rest of the day so you don't die.

If you really look at the word half...it shouldn't be spelled that way. I mean, how do you pronounce the word alf. I also can't shed any light on whether half empty/full needs a hyphen (i.e. half-empty) or if it really makes sense as a grammatical construction.
